Racers Track Club president Glen Mills is targeting a world-class spectacle at this year’s second annual Racers Grand Prix, which will be headlined by Usain Bolt and other world-record holders on June 10, at the National Stadium.
In addition to Bolt, three other world-record holders, along with several Olympic and World Championships stars, are expected to feature at the highly anticipated meet.
Mills, Racers Track Club’s president and head coach, was quick to point out that the organisation is determined to put on a high-calibre show – one which will top anything ever witnessed on Jamaican soil before.
“We have a wider span of stars in events that were not previously, and we have the top stars in the world, record holders, world championship … those events, even (jumpers) coming to participate in the triple jump,” Mills outlined, while noting fans could be on hand for a treat in the triple jump.
According to Mills, that jumper could go over 18 feet for the first time in Jamaica.
HOMAGE TO BOLT
While he held back on naming the other world-record holders, Mills was quick to point out that athletes and fans should consider the event a homage to Bolt.
Bolt, 30, will be retiring following the London 2017 World Championships and, will run what is expected to be his final race on local soil.
“It’s going to be tremendous because of diversity this year, not just because of the sprints, but the quality of competitors that we have,” noted Mills.
“The last event will be the salute 100 metres that will feature Usain Bolt in his final appearance on the track in Jamaica, so we want to create some fanfare around it and throughout the evening we will have spots that highlight his achievements over the years,” he stressed of his charge.
Meanwhile, the 2000 metres, 400 metre hurdles for women as well as the men’s 800m, have been added to this year’s programme.
Event tickets for the Racers Grand Prix will go on-sale (online) on May 1, 2017
The names of confirmed athletes will be revealed at next Friday’s press conference.
